1984: Galileo Con ’84

The 18th Official British Star Trek Convention was held from August 24 to 26 1984, in Newcastle upon Tyne, almost exactly ten years after the first convention in Leicester in September 1974. The convention book shows a much more organised Trek community, with pages devoted to the process of conrunning and official con selection, along the lines already established for the National Science Fiction Convention.
It’s also interesting to note the number of conventions and clubs advertising – evidence of a lively fan culture. Many fans joined more than one club, despite the impact of inflation – membership to most clubs now cost £2-3 per annum, as against Empathy’s 80p subscription in 1975. Most clubs provided 4-6 mailings per year, and some also held regular meetings and get-togethers.
Thanks to Janet Quarton for sharing her archive scans, and also for the BBC video shot at Galileo Con, here.
